Project 7
Music Promotion
Kosh

This was a good watch and had some well made short films from around europe. Personal favourites were Chris Morris's 'My Wrongs' (uk), Jan Kounen's 'Gizele Kerozene' (NL) and Juan Solanas 'L'Homme sans Tete' (FR). These were all original pieces that had surreal element to them, and this is what im looking to try and create with the audience.

Album artwork update, not finalised but gives a rough idea of what i want to achieve, i have not decided on the ending or the purpose of the "thing" that is stalking, haunting the guy. I have been looking at various videos and short films to get some inspiration for the look and feel i want to capture.

Project 7
Music Promotion
Kosh

Here are a few images and ideas to show the kind of atmosphere I want to create for the cd artwork and music video. The use of light and dark really creates atmosphere in your mind,
I don't want the audience to see everything. The most scariest things are the things you don't see. For example a room with the lights out its far scarier than with them left on. We take sight for granted and is one of the most important senses, I want to try and play with what people see and think they see.

This is an example of the kind of image that the right kind of atmosphere and contrast. The thing I love about the rubbish is no matter how hard you try only time can create something like this. I think it would almost be impossible to re-create this by hand.

Another amazing music video by Chris Cunningham and Aphex Twin.

Project 7
Music Promotion
Kosh

I have just spent the afternoon talking with KOSH on skype about the kind of thing he is about, who he is influenced by and what he is trying to say with his music. This is what he told me.

What I would like you to do for me:

- Currently my work is only in the form of sound which limits me when trying to get my name (KOSH) and the music I produce, out and known to the masses. I would like you to create a visual identity to my work. One that will stand out from the thousands of other up and coming producers and one that people will readily recognise and link it to the music.

- Produce a piece of graphic design for the sleeve of a 4 track EP.

-Create a video to run along side one of the tracks which relates to the themes and atmospheres conveyed in the track.

Where I get my inspiration:

- Everyday experiences and strange senarios

- Friends
- Nights out on the town
- Music (just a few) : Chemical brothers, Bowie, Spor, Lewis P, Massive Attack, Aphex etc...
- Artwork: German Expressionists especially their woodcuts
- LAUGHING.

The title of the album is 'Creep Down Your Area' which sums up the kind of music he makes quite well. I personally see small similarities in his work to that of Aphex Twin, not just beacuse of the level of darkness and straight up spooky feel but also because he makes quite a different range of music as does Aphex.

The first thing that needs to be done is to come up with a logo, or select an appropriate typeface that can represent KOSH for now and the future. The logo must be simple as with the album artwork, not too detailed and fiddely. It's about capturing the right atmosphere which I may do by mixing photography with a touch of photoshop.

An example of the atmosphere I want to create. This video works well because the narrative is strong and the visuals are interesting/disturbing. It was made by Chris Cunningham and got him noticed with his 'horribly comic' style. I want to use Cunningham as a starting point and try to develop my own techinque and idea of horror to use within this project.

Self Directed Project
Initial thoughts + Ideas

KOSH (Project Idea)

As i really want to get more experience and knowledge about the production of music videos and promotion i thought a good oppertunity would be to create a music video for artist KOSH who is currently sending out demo tapes(cd's) to record labels to show them his music. As we all know sound and vision go well together and compliment each other. Therefore i want to collaborate with him to promote both of us in different areas but joining forces for an all out assualt on what sound and vision can produce when put together. This idea would include making a logo, album artwork and music video for KOSH . This is really something that i strongly want to do after i graduate and have been interested in for a couple of years now.

"Chris Cunningham's directorial work is well known in the worlds of music video, commercial, and video art. He first achieved notoriety in 1997 with the horrific and comic clip for Come to Daddy by Aphex Twin. In quick succession he created six memorable and highly individual clips, each borne of his ability to extract a song's subtleties and pour them into a visual form. Mr. Cunningham's commercial work have also shown a bit of his ability in developing an interesting and subtle vignette out of a small bit of script."

This is some of the work C.Cunningham did for Aphex that i really like the look and feel of and is something i want to try and incorporate into the music video and artwork, as KOSH's music is quite dark and experimental. At the bottom of the page is some work by design group BUCK and X-Press 2's 12inch artwork by Red-design for the kill 100 single.

Some more album artwork for Quantic's latest album and also Bonobo's again by Red-design.
This is a strong image, and works really well because it has depth to it, which has been created by actually making most of the front cover text and imagery. Which gives the final image an interesting quality that would not have been achieved with just CAD.

The Bonbo album cover works well because of the clever use of white products found at the artists home. Even if you did not know that, it still gives it a collective feel for the album titled 'Days to Come' which gives me the image of building on what we already have.

Self Directed Project
Initial thoughts

When i first received this brief at the start of term i was buzzing with different ideas of possible projects i could do. The toughest part so far has been to decipher what the real under lying outcomes are expected of this project. Its a very confusing brief because it is anything but open but at the same time there are no official boundaries set in stone that would help guide me. I have found it difficult to start because there are so many starting points and i am not really sure what is expected at the end. I thought this project was about working outside the usual 'Graphic Design box' expanding on intrests that a designer may have no matter how abstract. I picked up quite a strong sense that collaboration was important to show in the work for this project, because collaborating outside of Chelsea is good practice and should produce some fresh original work and concept.

Re-work of final idea

With an extra week to continue on the project i thought i would try and develop my idea into a more refined final design, and re-shot the photo's with a better selection than the previous lot that i had taken. These are the re-worked final designs.
